11/11/2001 As you can see by the picture, this movie contains a pretty accomplished cast; Harvey Keitel, Cameron Diaz, Craig Sheffer, and Billy Zane. It is, however, a complete mess. Keitel and Diaz are a newly married couple on vacation on a small island in New England. Sheffer is an old friend of Diaz's who is also vacationing on the same island. Diaz's old boyfriend, Billy Zane, shows up unexpectedly while Sheffer and Keitel are doing some late-night fishing. One thing leads to another, and before you know it Zane is butt-naked and dead. At this point, I guess its supposed to be a whodunnit. But already I didn't care. This movie is listed as a Comedy/Thriller, but to me it was neither funny nor thrilling. Its similar to A Simple Plan, where everything that can go wrong does. When Keitel finds the naked dead Zane, he is furious. But at the same time he plans out how to protect Diaz from police entanglements. Even though he is a well respected judge, he decides the best course of action is to dispose of Zane's body. But of course, nothing goes according to plan. Somehow they are unable to get rid of the body, Sheffer just happens to show up and ruin their plan every time. At this point, the movie gets way over the top, only more than happy to pile one totally unlikely scenario on another. The ending of this movie is unbelievably ridiculous, almost reaching the level of Roadrunner/Wile E Coyote. This movie is actually a remake of a 1993 Norwegian movie. I hope the original wasn't as asinine as this. Strangely, I see a lot of good reviews for this movie, of course Armageddon got good reviews too. CDWH |
