Movie of the Week |
||
| 8/01/02 This will easily be the most divisive movie I've ever chosen. This movie is one that you will either hate or love. I have the feeling that the hate side will have the majority. I doubt this movie got many kind reviews, but I think it is hilarious. Wayne (Steve Zahn), JD (Jack Black) and Darren (Jason Biggs) have been lifelong best friends. They also share an obsession with Neil Diamond, sometimes an unhealthy obseesion. Things are going great, until Darren finds "love". Judith (Amanda Peet) totally gets Darren wrapped around her finger. She gets Darren to give up his Neil Diamond tribute band, totally cut his best friends out of his life and generally turn him into a slave. When Darren and Judith get engaged, with Darren agreeing to take Judith's last name, Wayne and JD decide they've had enough and decide to help their buddy get out of Judith's clutches. So they hatch a plan. They decide to kidnap Judith and fake her death. They then set Darren up on a date with his old high school flame, who gave up her life in the circus to train to become a nun and is about to take her final vows. All this in the span of 2 weeks. I know it sounds crazy. To me, this movie is funny without being as gross as There's Something About Mary or as dumb as American Pie. There is, however, one problem. I like Steve Zahn, I like Jack Black and I like Amanda Peet. Jason Biggs, on the other hand, I really dislike. (Does anyone like him) But the rest of the cast makes up for him. That includes a top notch performance by R Lee Ermey. You might remember him as the drill sergeant from Full Metal Jacket. Here he plays the slightly psychotic ex-football coach from the boys' high school. Also, look for a short role by Neil Diamond, playing himself. CDWH |
