Irma Vep
This is a the story of Rene Vidal, a once celebrated
French director whose career is now in ruins. In
hopes of resurrecting his career, he decides to do a
remake of the classic silent movie Les Vampires.
After watching the Hong Kong movie "Heroic Trio", he
decides that Maggie Cheung is the only actress who can
play Irma Vep. (Who wouldn't considering how hot she
is in that movie, and how much she kicks ass)
Of course, this doesn't sit well with some of the
other members of the production. They think only a
French actress should play Irma Vep. Things seemingly
go downhill from the very moment Cheung shows up in
Paris.
As the production experiences problem after problem,
there's any interesting side story as one of the
makeup artists decides she has a crush on Maggie.
One intriguing feature of this movie is how it derides
the intellectual nature of French films. But the
director, Olivier Assayas, actually uses this to
celebrate French film. This is best seen in a scene
where Maggie Cheung is being interviewed by a French
reporter who can't help but extol the virtues of
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Steven Segal.
The best feature for me, however, is Maggie Cheung.
Sure she's beautiful and sexy but she can really act.
One of the most challenging roles for an actor has to
be playing yourself. (Something I will delve into
more in a future review) Cheung comes off so natural
and real, you'd swear she wasn't even acting, the true sign of a great actor.
