Young Man with a Horn
This was a 1950 movie starring Kirk Douglas in a film
loosely based on the life of jazz trumpeter, Bix
Beiderbecke.
Douglas is an orphan boy who happens to meet a
trumpeter who teaches him how to play. As he grows
up, he becomes an exceptional talent.
He starts making a good living playing in a dance
band. This is unfulfilling for him, however, and he
goes out after shows to play jazz till all hours of
the morning.
He happens to get involved in a love triangle between
Doris Day and Lauren Bacall. (Lucky guy.) This causes
tension in his professional life, which he quits in
order to follow his love for jazz.
The movie itself is hardly a wonder, but one
interesting aspect is how the film treats black
characters. They are treated as real people as well
as featuring them in prominent roles. While its no
Raisin in the Sun, it was a sensation for 1950.
