Smilla's Sense of Snow
This movie is a murder mystery starring Julia Ormond
as Smilla Jasperson, a native Greenlander living in
Copenhagen.
This is a Danish movie about a little Greenland boy's
mysterious death. The authorities have determined it
an accident, but Smilla suspects foul play.
The title relates to Smilla's ability as a native
Greenlander to look at a patch of snow and know what
has happened on it like she was reading a book.
This movie costars Gabriel Byrne, Richard Harris and
Vanessa Redgrave.
As Smilla probes deeper into the boy's death, she
begins to discover a much larger conspiracy at work.
This is a wonderfully filmed movie, probably the only
one I've ever seen that was set in Copenhagen or
Greenland. Julia Ormond is utterly convincing as a
broody Greenlander with a chip on her shoulder.
The only downside to this movie is the LA
Confidential-like awful ending. But like LA
Confidential, the ending does nothing to take away
from the rest of the movie.
