Double Happiness
I saw this movie last night on The Romance Channel
(the horror). I'm not quite sure why this was on
there because this is more a story of a Chinese girl
coming of age in Canada.
Jade is a young woman who was born in Hong Kong but
has grown up in Canada. Jade is played by Sandra Oh,
who is probably best remembered for Rita in the HBO
series Arliss. She won a cable Ace award for that
role. She also has won 2 Genies, the Canadian version
of the Oscar, one for this movie and one for Last
Night.
Jade is a confused young woman. Her parents want to
maintain traditional Chinese values for their family,
while Jade has grown up surrounded by the values of
the West. Things reach a head when she falls for a
white man. This is unacceptable for her family, who
want her to marry a nice Chinese boy.
Jade is also an actress, another endeavor her parents
can't understand. But she meets rejection at every turn. She is not
accepted in "white" cinema because she is Chinese, and is not
accepted in Chinese cinema because she can't speak Chinese.
This is a good movie to understand the clash of
cultures that occurs when traditional Asian families
raise their children in a western environment.
